In 1998, a group of volunteers in Takatsuki City united to support those affected by severe droughts caused by climate change in Papua New Guinea. Their efforts became even more critical after a devastating tsunami on July 17 of the same year led to massive flooding. In response, they organized a support initiative to collect and send donations of clothing and other relief supplies to the affected areas.
By February 1999, the group formally established itself as the overseas cooperation organization “Cuscus.” The name “Cuscus” comes from a marsupial of the genus Cuscus, which inhabits the forests of Papua New Guinea, Sulawesi (Celebes), Australia, and other regions. The group was affectionately named “Cuscus” as its activities began with relief efforts in Papua New Guinea, and the name has a cute sound similar to chuckling.
